CrossFit Per Ardua is Cape Breton’s first CrossFit box, operating since 2012. We have a team of dedicated and passionate coaches with over 20 years combined experience  with a desire to help you achieve incredible things.

We're committed to helping you reach your fitness goals. With our help, you will achieve fitness beyond your expectations. In our gym we build on three key values to help our athletes succeed; Coaching, Community, & Training.

Our goal is to offer the best possible strength and conditioning facility on our island. Our methods of community based fitness have been proven effective and deliver the fastest and most results possible. No matter your age, CrossFit Per Ardua will welcome you into our friendly community.

We are a 4000 sq.ft facility dedicated to all things CrossFit with every piece of equipment needed to achieve this.

IS CROSSFIT DANGEROUS?

The short answer to this is no. While there is always a risk in any sort of physical activity that will actually produce results, there is some risk, you are moving your body, you are working. CrossFit is much more dangerous than a slow walk on a treadmill, yes. However, at Per Ardua, our staff of experienced and knowledgeable staff are totally dedicated to keeping each and every member moving properly and safely. Safety is our main concern, over anything else.

CrossFit uses functional movements, they are movements that you use now in daily life. CrossFit will help prepare you for life, it will help you get stronger and faster at whatever it is that you do. If you want to improve, CrossFit is for you.

WHAT DOES “PER ARDUA” MEAN?

“Per Ardua” is a latin term that means “through hardship” or “through adversity”. Through hardship, or through adversity is a perfect way to describe CrossFit. Taking a look at our logo, you will notice it contains an “X” but looking closer we can find the meaning behind it. The “X” is comprised of arrows that point into the centre, this represents the community for us, all headed toward a certain goal, whatever your goal may be. The top arrow has a red area waiting for the main arrow to fall into place, this represents you…coming into the CrossFit community and towards your goal.

DO YOU ALLOW DROP INS?

Yup! However, space and times are VERY limited. Email us if you are interested in dropping in. If you are a member of another CrossFit Affiliate, then you may train for free. You MUST schedule your drop in. If you are coming from out of town, let us know! You must be a member of another CrossFit Affiliate.

CAN I TRY CROSSFIT BEFORE I JOIN?

We are very open to showing you what CrossFit is all about, call us or email us to schedule a time when you can come by to check things out!

WHAT DO I NEED?

Shorts, t-shirt and sneakers. Water bottle. You want to be cool! The best sneakers to wear are minimalist sneakers, flat soles. Inov-8s, New Balance Minimus, Reebok CrossFit Nanos, Vibram Five Fingers, Converse All Stars, Nike Metcons are some good sneakers for CrossFit. That is about it, you need nothing else but a driven attitude!

DO YOU HAVE SHOWERS?

Of course, we have unisex bathrooms at Per Ardua and each one is a private bathroom with a private shower area.

ISN’T THIS EXPENSIVE?

It’s really not. Think about a CrossFit box as having a full time coach and trainer with you every time you come. Your coach knows you, knows what you can and can’t do, has notes about previous injuries and we also offer nutritional lectures. We care about you and what you are doing. CrossFit Per Ardua is very exclusive right now, we only take a certain amount of members at present. We are not a high volume gym, at most we will have 150 members, compared to other local gyms that have 700-1500 we can really focus on our members and give them a very personal experience every single day. Become one of the members of our family!

I HAVE AN EXISTING INJURY, WHAT CAN I DO?
Lots! The great thing about CrossFit in general is that it is so scalable. We have many members who have come to us with previous injuries that we can work around, or help to fix. Don’t let a nagging injury stop you from getting fit, our coaches can help you!

WHAT IS A WOD?

“WOD” is Workout Of the Day.

WHAT DOES AMRAP MEAN?

AMRAP means “As many rounds/reps as possible”.

WILL I GET BIG BULKY MUSCLES?

No, a few things need to be in place for becoming big and bulky, a very high caloric diet and using extremely heavy weights on a constant basis, we do focus on strength and getting very strong, but we are not constantly lifting extreme amounts of weight, nor do we recommend a high caloric diet. Especially for women, you do NOT have the amount of testosterone that men do, and if becoming big and bulky came easily, there would not be one single skinny dude in the world.

Having said that, if you do want to gain muscle, CrossFit will help you achieve that. Typically CrossFitters end up gaining some muscle and dropping a great deal of body fat, becoming stronger, faster, fitter.

DO I HAVE TO BE IN SHAPE TO START?

Not at all, this is a big misconception. You can’t be too fit for CrossFit either, workouts can always be challenging no matter what your physical fitness level is. Infinitely scalable workouts ensure a fantastic workout for everyone. You won’t have to lift weights beyond your level or perform movements beyond your skill set. Everything takes time, along with proper instruction and support, you will get in the best shape of your life!

HOW HARD IS CROSSFIT?

CrossFit is as hard as you want it to be. Give it your all, be honest with yourself and make the most of it. Anything worth doing is never easy.

CAN I BRING MY KIDS?

Let us know your situation, and we may be able to help out, many of our members bring their kids in to hang out while they train, however will have some age restricitons.
